The School holidays have finished, the Street Food Festival has moved out, and work on the park picks right up again. We popped into Dreamworld this week to capture an update on some of the projects happening in the park right now.
Giant Drop
Giant Drop has closed for its multi month upgrade. The ride is scheduled to reopen September 15. At this stage we know the Tower itself will get a repaint, and some sort of lighting package.
New concrete has been poured around the base of the Giant Drop, leading into what is the former Rocky Hollow Train Station. We anticipate this is in preparation for Giant Drops refurbishment.
Some surveyors pegs have appeared in the new void of an area that is between the new railway tracks, Giant Drop and Steel Taipan.
Some equipment is being stored under Steel Taipan at the Giant Drop end. Is this for Giant Drops refurb?
Speaking of Steel Taipan, heres a photo of where the old meets new from the elevated pathways of the Giant Drop. Rocky Hollow Train Station still stands (and with its signage). We have been asked what that tower with the wheel was for before, some thinking it was part of the chairlift ride the park had. It is infact a fake oil rig, part of Giant Drops theming. The Tower is a Gold Coast icon, seen from quite a distance away on the ground. It's upgrade is destined to have an impact greater than what is noticed in the park.
Dreamworld Railway Work on the railway infrastructure continues.
Boom Gates have been installed at each level crossing, replacing the myraid of different crossing systems scattered around the park.
The work next to the old Rivertown Tavern restaurant continues, with the brick wall now painted, and a fence being installed during our visit. No further rail track has been laid here.
The refurbishment of Central Park Station is nearing completion. Remediation work on one of the awning supports is occurring.
Corroboree Train Station is getting some new fencing built on the platform. The fencing here was previously wooden with wire.
Trackwork around the Giant Drop appears to be mostly complete.
Mick Doohan has left the building
During the week we were alerted to the removal of Mick Doohan's name from the Motocoaster ride. Mick Doohan's name has been attached to the Motocoaster since the rides opening in 2007. It was reported at the time that Mick Doohan was involved with the rides design to make the motorbike themed coaster as realistic as possible.
The removal of his name from the rides branding, and website signals the end of this partnership, however we wouldn't expect much to change from the rides renaming... Main Street
Main Streets Gardens are getting a refurbishment. A large bulk of the garden plants have been cleaned up and torn out. A nice garden can add to selling a nice experience, and you can certainly tell when a park doesn't care for their gardens. It is great to see these gardens get the attention they deserve.
The Wiggles
Finally, the Wiggles this week visited Dreamworld to record and tape segments for their upcoming tv series, "Ready Steady Wiggle". Dreamworld has a long standing relationship with the Wiggles, with many segments from the iconic tots band having been filmed at Dreamworld throughout the years. The only remaining Wiggles World in the world still resides at Dreamworld.
